The Room Behind the Noise

Posted on

Most of us live in a busy front room. It's where the phone rings, the news plays, and the list of things to do keeps growing. We spend so much time there that we forget the house has other rooms.

But there is a quieter room behind the noise. You've been there before. Maybe it was on a walk, when the light came through the trees in a certain way. Maybe it was holding someone's hand in a hospital, or in the pause after a piece of music ended. For a moment, you knew you were part of something much larger, and that it was good.

That room is always there. We don't have to build it or earn it. We only have to remember the way in.

Stillness isn't the absence of life. It's the part of life that has been waiting for you.

This week, try finding the door three times a day. Before you get out of bed, before you eat lunch, and before you fall asleep, stop and take three slow breaths. Ask quietly, "What is here, underneath all this?" Don't look for an answer. Just listen.

The noise won't go away. But you may find that it doesn't reach as far inside you as it used to.

This week's practice

Three times a day, take three slow breaths and ask, "What is here, underneath all this?" Write down anything you notice in one sentence.

Gratitude Is a Way of Seeing

Gratitude isn't only a feeling we have when things go well. It's a way of looking at the world that finds the good already present. Try this: before you sleep, name three things from today that you would miss if they were gone. Watch how your eyes change over a week.

The Courage to Begin Again

Every morning offers the same gift: a new start. Yesterday's mistakes don't have to follow you into today unless you invite them. Beginning again isn't failure. It's the most spiritual thing we do, and we get to do it as many times as we need.

Many Paths, One Mountain

People climb the same mountain from different sides. From where each climber stands, the path looks different, and so does the view. But the higher we go, the closer the paths become. When we meet someone on another path, we can ask about their view instead of arguing about the trail.

Listening as Prayer

We often think of prayer as speaking. But some of the deepest prayer is listening: to the wind, to a friend, to the quiet voice inside. This week, the next time someone talks to you, listen as if they were the Divine speaking. In a real way, they are.
