Living the Sacred Life

The sacred life isn't a separate life. It's this one, lived with attention, kindness and gratitude. Here are ways to bring spirit into every part of your day.

We sometimes imagine a spiritual life happening somewhere else: on a mountain, in a temple, on a retreat far from dishes and deadlines. But the only life we can make sacred is the one we're living right now.

Living the sacred life means bringing the same attention you'd bring to prayer into the rest of your day. Nothing has to change on the outside. Everything can change on the inside.

Six places to begin

At home

Treat one ordinary task as a ritual. Wash the dishes slowly. Light a candle at dinner. Bless each room as you tidy it.

At work

Before a meeting, silently wish everyone in it well. Let your work be an offering, whatever it is.

In love and family

Listen a little longer than feels natural. Look for the Divine in the person who frustrates you most.

With money

Give thanks for every bill you pay, for the service it brought you. Give a little away each month, freely.

In your body

Your body is where Spirit lives in the world. Rest when you're tired. Move with thanks. Eat with attention.

In nature

Step outside every day, even for a minute. Notice the sky. Nature is the oldest teacher we have.

The sacred pause

The simplest way to live a sacred life is to pause before you move from one thing to the next. Before you open a door, start the car, or answer a message, stop for one breath. In that breath, remember who you are and what matters. Then go on.

This week's experiment

Choose one doorway in your home. Every time you walk through it this week, take one conscious breath. At the end of the week, notice what changed.

Marking the seasons

Many traditions honor the turning of the year. Marking the seasons reminds us that we are part of nature's rhythm, not separate from it.

Spring equinox

Plant something. Name one new beginning you're ready for.

Summer solstice

Watch the sunset on the longest day. Give thanks for what has grown.

Autumn equinox

Share a meal. Name what you're harvesting and what you're ready to release.

Winter solstice

Light a candle in the long night. Rest, and trust that the light returns.
